Early Learning Call to Action
Our goal, every child in Clark County is prepared on the first day of kindergarten.
To that end on June 1,2017, we will launch the Our Children Cant Wait movement with a community early call to action.
The Call to Action agenda will include:
A keynote address by Dr. Nathan McCann, Ridgefield School District Superintendent;
A panel presentation by parents, child care providers and home visitors;
A call to action by Anne McEnerny-Ogle, Vancouver City Council member and mayoral candidate.
Table conversations and an action pledge.
Why is this important? In February 2017 Support for Early Learning & Families (SELF) released our 2017 State of Our Children & Families report. The report indicates, based on the fall 2016 WaKIDS Kindergarten assessment that only 43% of entering kindergarteners demonstrate the skills needed in al 6 key developmental domains: Social Emotional, Physical, Language, Cognitive, Literacy and Math. The statewide average is 47%.
The report also tells us where our greatest disparities exist; children living in poverty, homeless and English is not their first language.
We can do better!
For the last couple of years SELF has been laying the foundation for the Our Children Cant Wait (OCCW)movement.
Our vision is simple. Our Children Cant Wait unifies the community to ensure that all our children are safe, healthy, nurtured and prepared for kindergarten. And that includes every child. The wonder years of birth to kindergarten are explosive years for learning, and you just cant get these years back. We must do all we can to ensure that every child growing up in our community have safe, nurturing environments where the seeds of confidence, empathy, love and learning are sprouted.
We all have a role in creating a community where all young children thrive! Wont you join us?
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
